Waterton for three days CANCELLED

This will be a credit card style event. Bill Stilwell and Bruce Bonney are staying at a motel in Waterton from June 26th to June 28th inclusive. We will start by traveling from Calgary Friday morning and stopping for a ride about half way from Nanton to Chain Lakes and riding to Chain lakes and return. This will get us to Waterton in late afternoon.

The campgrounds are undergoing renovations and expansions resulting in fewer campsites being available.

Each day trip is planned with weather being the final determining factor.

Day One north out of Waterton and east on highway 5 then south on highway 6 until we reach the USA border. Lunch here and return. Approximately 64.5 k return with 1478 m of climbing. This will be the most energy consuming ride. It can be very hot with the only potable water available at the restrooms on the Canadian side of the border. Great lookout stop and scenic site lines all along the route.

Day Two up to Cameron Lake. This road is still closed to vehicular traffic as they continue to rebuild guard rails etc. So the only people we will see are other cyclists including those who have rented E bikes in town and hikers.

This is 32 k with 560 m of climbing. We will take rest breaks and one will include a visit to the site of the first oil discovery in Alberta! Great hike options upon arriving at the lake include partially circling the lake on the west side to get to the USA and climbing up the east side trail for spectacular views of the lake below. 

Day Three up Red Rock Canyon. This road may or may not be open to vehicular traffic by the time we visit. The locals are thinking not. This is a less strenuous day ride and allows for a 1.1 k hike to beautiful Blakiston falls. This pathway with wooden boardwalk and stairs where appropriate was built just 2 years ago. We will have checked out before riding so once we finish this ride we will wish you a fond farewell with hopes that you enjoyed this adventure.
