G7 Summit in June affects cycling in Kananaskis and Highwood Pass

Thursday, May 01, 2025 1:07 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

Heads’ up! The G7 Summit is coming to Kananaskis June 15 to 17. Select roads, campgrounds, day-use areas, and trails in the area will be temporarily closed before, during and after the summit. These closures will have impacts to cycling on Highway 40 and Highwood Pass.

Highwood Hustle date change

The Highwood Pass section of road will open June 1, instead of the usual June 15. With this change, and access restrictions in June, Our Highwood Pass rides will happen in the last week of May this year. New dates for the “Highwood Hustle” will be May 24 to 31. See: Highwood Hustle – Save the Date!

Highway 40 access restrictions

A wide area around Kananaskis Village will be closed for security reasons from June 10 to 18.

During the closures we will not be able to access most of Highway 40 from the North side. This affects rides to Highwood Pass from the North gate (by Peter Lougheed Park) during this timeframe. Many hiking trails will also be closed in the area.

  • Rides prior to June 10 may start from the North or South side of the pass.
  • Any rides between June 10 and 18 must start from the South side of the pass.
  • Normal access resumes June 19
